3 Tips for Saving Energy at Home

Going green is something that just about everyone is talking about everywhere you turn – on TV, the internet, at work, etc. If you are interested in becoming a bit more eco-friendly, an easy way to do start going green is by saving energy at home. There are many ways that you can do this, including re-using your very own grocery bags, purchasing a hybrid vehicle and simply making more energy-efficient decisions in the household.
At home, you can improve energy efficient by doing a number of things differently. The good news is that a large number of them are easy and inexpensive. Here are three of them.
- Change Out Your Bulbs
An easy and effective way to save on your energy bill each month is to switch out your bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs (also known as CFLs). These bulbs are affordable and long-lasting. This type of light bulb has the ability to put out the same amount of light as the traditional incandescent light bulb, yet it uses one-fourth of the energy.
- Lower Your Water Heater Temperature
A regular water heater will heat and re-heat the water inside in order to maintain the temperature that it is set to. If you reduce that temperature setting, it will reduce the required amount of heating, essentially reducing your energy bill.
If this doesn’t equal enough savings for you, then you can also consider replacing your traditional water heater with a more energy-efficient option: a tankless water heater. This type of water heater is electrically-powered and will provide you with hot water instantly on-demand. Therefore, you will only pay for hot water when it is needed and used, and you will never have to worry about running out of hot water.
- Check for Holes and Gaps
Due to the way your electrical system is installed, there is a good chance that there may be holes and gaps throughout the home. Check for any voids around outlet boxes, light fixtures, etc. that may allow the transfer of heat. If any gaps are found, foam should be applied to reduce energy loss and your utility bill.
